Cuesta de San José

 

      

The streets and alleyways which climb to the top of the Albaicin are called "cuestas", slopes. The Cuesta de San José is best known for the minaret of the old mosque which stood at its foot, the Mosque of the Hermits, and which was consecrated by the Catholic Monarchs themselves. A bellfry was added, but the minaret remains intact, with its arched window for the muezzin to call the faithful to prayer.

The minaret of Granada's Great Mosque is said to have been very similar to this one, now called el alminar de San José. At the foot of the tower we see the telltale water well, which now supplies a cast-iron drinking fountain.
