Alhambra

For 200 years, the ruins of the Moorish palace of Granada have captivated the imagination of writers, artists and adventurers. In spite of the lingering fear of the European Christians for the Mohammetan invaders who dominated this part of Spain until 1492, British, American and French intellectuals began, in the early 19th century, to realize that the Moors had brought with them a cosmopolitan and sophisticated culture, creating courts of wisdom which attracted scholars from every corner of the known world. This flourishing civilization had its centers first in the great cities of Toledo and Cordoba. But after these fell to the Christian knights, in the late 11th and early 13th centuries, an obscure feifdom in the far south was suddenly thrust into the foreground of history. The refugees who fled to Granada, sensing that their days of glory were coming to an end, devoted their skills, knowledge and gold to building the most lavishly appointed palace Spain had ever seen, the Alhambra.

Author and historian Lorenzo Bohme has rendered a detailed description of this extraordinary monument in his book "Granada, City of My Dreams", published by Editorial Natívola in May 2000. Here, Lorenzo has taken his digital camera to create a virtual tour of the great citadel, which is composed of a fortress, two halls of state, a series of luxury residences, a popular quarter, and, perched high on a neighbouring hillside, a country retreat.
